Should I outsource HR? The questions to ask….

Most small to medium sized business owners know the frustration of spending time on non-revenue generating activities. From contracts and payroll, to benefits, pensions and managing performance, directors and managers can spend a huge amount of their working day involved in these time consuming but essential tasks.

The answer for many businesses may be to outsource part or all of their HR requirements to a third party, so they can focus on what they do best. But when does it make sense to do it? There are several questions to consider before making a decision:

How many employees do I have?

Businesses with less than 50 employees rarely have a full-time HR manager. Instead, a manager or finance director is given the HR responsibility because they may have some relevant experience in their past career. Organisations with more than 50 employees often find it easier to have an in-house HR manager or department and justifiably so, as their needs differ to that of smaller business.

What services do I need?

This varies, depending on the nature of the business. An HR consultant can be used  to either:

How much will an outsourced service cost me?

The cost of the service varies depending on the level of HR that is required. For example, I offer fixed price toolkits that cover all the necessary legal requirements. These are one-off payments (starting from £275 + VAT) that help ensure business compliance. I also work alongside businesses dealing with day-to-day issues on a retained service basis.

Alternatively, Doodle HR offers a flexible time bank scheme, where you purchase and bank hours of HR support that can be used as and when required within a twelve month period. This means you can dip in and out of an outsourced service as and when HR needs arise, with no on-going commitment.

What type of provider I you want?

Do you want someone who gets to know your business, employees and culture that can be flexible and bespoke in the service they offer? One that is only a phone call away, 24 hours a day, operating like your very own HR manger, but without the commitment? Alternatively, you may prefer to sign up to an HR support line to complement the expertise you already have within your business.

Either way, if HR administration is beginning to slow down the productivity of your business, it’s time to consider outsourcing. Outsourcing HR can not only give you access to skills, knowledge and support, but also save you substantial costs in the long term.
